The temples are renowned for their intricate carvings, which depict a wide range of subjects, including deities, celestial nymphs (apsaras), animals, and various aspects of daily life. The sculptures are known for their sensuous depictions, which reflect a celebration of human life and its connection to the divine.

Originally, there were around 85 temples, but over time, only about 20 temples have survived. These temples are divided into three groups: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The Western Group, which includes the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, is the most famous and well-preserved.

The Khajuraho temples were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, highlighting their cultural and historical significance. They offer a glimpse into the artistic achievements, religious practices, and societal values of medieval India.
